The government of the Republic of Azerbaijan is pleased to inform that a diplomatic representation has initiated activities in Mexico City.
Diplomatic relations between Mexico and Azerbaijan were established in 1992. Considering the areas of opportunity that exist and the strong friendship ties currently present between these two nations, Baku decided in 2007 to install its first diplomatic representation in Latin America.
Like Mexico, Azerbaijan possesses a very rich and ancient culture. It is considered one of the cradles of human civilization, since sites of the most ancient societies have been found within its territory. In 1968, the jaw-bone of a primitive man of Azykh was found in the Azykh Cave. This group of people lived in the region 250-300 thousand years ago.It was also a place of worship for Zoroastrians, who were people that worshiped fire. On May 28, 1918, Azerbaijan became one the first independent republics of the East. After a few years, it became part of the former U.S.S.R. and, on October 18, 1991, regained its independence.
The main objective of this office is to work in close relationship with Mexican authorities in strategic issues for both countries. As well, is has the strong commitment to strengthen Azerbaijan´s cooperation relations with all countries of the Latin American region.
The energy sector is perhaps the main issue in the relationship with Mexico, due to its complexity and the convenience of creating risk sharing investments between the two nations. Azerbaijan was the first country in the world to start exploiting oil as an energy resource in 1848. It possesses more than 150 years of experience in the fields of exploration, obtention and transformation of oil. Mexico could benefit from this experience and with help of the azerbaijanian know how, be able to reach and exploit all of the oil resources that it currently possesses.
Nevertheless, cooperation in other areas will also be searched upon. Commercial relations and economic cooperation, educational activities and university level exchanges, tourism promotion for both regions and cultural understanding are some of the many fields on which Azerbaijan and Mexico can work together.
